Yes, I know, the title is so popular almost everyone is using it :)
had a great Christmas with my sister and her family--very low key, the way I like it. got back and put in some time for work (this borrowing vacation time from the future is very exhausting! This should be my last year of doing that, though). New Years Eve went to a movie and lunch with my friend, then developed a severe headache and cancelled my NYE plans with a different friend. I really just wanted to stay home and watch movies with my kitties anyway.
Kitty wasn't too thrilled about me being gone, but loved having me home for last weekend. I would lay on the couch and she would curl up by my face--not on my face, you understand, I could still breathe without getting fur up my nose, and see the tv if necessary. We played with her stick&string toy, and she got to go in and out as much as she wanted to. Which wasn't a whole lot, since it was pretty cold outside.
Ani... well, he didn't seem to notice that I'd been gone, but he did make a few forays upstairs not knowing I was home yesterday. He managed to corner Kitty in the kitchen at one point, but I stopped that. I wish my kitties would get along. :(
Monday I had all these plans for shopping and stuff, but Sunday I did my finances and realized that shopping was probably not a good option. I have just enough for the bills I have left to pay and maybe some milk at the store, and that's about it until payday.
This morning was weird. When I got up, the sky was overcast. When I went downstairs after getting ready for work, the sky was clear. When I put the recycling out, I saw storm clouds moving in from the northwest, and the light was a yellowish color. Plus a few snowflakes. Snowflakes??? Yup. Let Kitty out for her morning constitutional, and about 5 minutes later she was desperately trying to get back in--it was definitely snowing. Light, powdery stuff. Too late for TPTB to cancel school, and it stopped before I went outside to start my car for work. Weird, weird weather this morning.
And my car started!!!! Why is this a big deal? I'm sure I've posted before about this, but for those of you who haven't heard, my car has a really funky ignition. It's a Saturn ION, and for some reason in this model they use some sort of fluid to carry the spark from the place where you turn the key to the thing that starts the engine. (yeah, ok, my brother owns a car repair shop and I don't even know the parts to the engine thingy). so back to my story. When it gets cold, the fluid won't carry the spark, and the car won't start. Up until this year this happened maybe 2-3 times a winter. A little more during Snowmageddon, a little less on milder years. This year, however, it's been 2-3 times per week. This is not acceptable. Takes me 1o-15 minutes to get my car started. How do I get it started? By warming up the key, sticking it in the ignition, and repeat. I have a lighter in my car now for this purpose. Better than running from the stove in my house to the car in the parking lot. Oh how I wish for a garage sometimes! I'm taking it to be serviced tomorrow (Wednesday), and I've told them about the problem, so hopefully they can think of something. Other than "Just buy a new car, silly girl!" I really don't want a car payment until at least after the family reunion next year. I don't want to tie up my funds that way.
Ok, enough of that. Here's hoping this year is a good one, for one and all!

Hello Again
Been a busy couple of months. Danja's Wedding went very well (pictures are on facebook, friend me if you're not a friend already). I managed to spend a lot more time with my brother B and his wife than with their kids this time, and I actually slept quite a bit. It was really nice. Family reunion squeezed into the wedding time, well, ok, right after we finished decorating the cultural hall at the local stake center we--Dad, me, my brothers and sisters and interested spouses--sat in a circle and conducted family business. The most important part, to me, is that the reunion in 2013 will be in Maryland!!! YAY!!! It will be so fun for me to have my family come!
Meanwhile, at work we've held a Mission Simulation, simulating Commissioning activities for the instrument teams. It went very well. Enough problems so that we were sure we were on the right track, but nothing major or show-stopping. Plus we got lunch brought in for three days, which is always fun (if not so good for my diet).
Church, well, is what it is. Summertime in Nursery with people taking vacations, you'd think there'd be less kids, but no, it's the adults we're short of this year.
Rehearsals for Rumors are going well. We all need to work on our lines more, but I suppose that's natural. Performances are August 12, 13, and 20 at 8:00pm (I think that's the right time), and 21st at 2:00pm (yes, I'll have to miss church again that day, but I can go to the earlier ward so that works out ok). Oh, and this one is not for kids. It's adult humor, and there's some language in it. For those in the area who might want to come :) I'll send out an email with the flyer when it's ready.
Other than that, I have been SICK. head cold, mostly, moving south into my lungs. Was doing better but last night two coughing fits and a cat that couldn't sleep makes today a lot harder. Sigh.
But at least now I'm caught up, right? So here's a parting thought: Focus on the positive. This brings better results than focusing on the negative, or even not focusing at all (according to a study published in the NY Times--still looking for the link for that, though). I will be better soon. And I did loose 2 lbs this week :)

More success and a Happy Easter
Well, my sister (from the last post) replied that I'd given her a lot to think about, so I think we're not actually fighting. So that's good. And I lost 2.2 lbs!! I weighed in today, after being gone last week (more on that later), and I'd lost 2.2 lbs in 2 weeks!! So even after visiting my sister and then coming home with strep throat and being home for 4 days straight (almost), eating ice cream, pasta with cheesy sauces, and drinking lots of juice, I still lost 2.2 pounds. Yay me!!!
I also got to spend time with my newests nice, Sophia (shown here with older sister Malena). She's so cute, if a bit on the crabby side ;) She finally decided to eat solid foods while I was there--we think she didn't like the cereals because they were so bland. She loves carrots and sweet potatoes--and chocolate ice cream (of course!).
OK, so last weekend I went to Utah to visit my sister B and her family for Easter. We were hopeful that she'd be at least moving into her new house, but that didn't happen, so we just hung out in Logan. I got to play with the kids, and B and I went out for lunch on Saturday (and more Aggie Ice Cream--yum! It will be a while before Ben and Jerry's tempts me again).
Bonnie, the oldest, had a project on Friday involving a beehive that she'd made herself out of yellow cake using Peeps to make bees. It was very cute.
We then went down to Ogden for the Easter Egg hunt with the Hales cousins, which went very well. The weather was really nice that day too. The whole time it was fairly cold--highs in the 40's, sometimes making it up to the 50's. Then when I came back to Maryland I walked out of the airport into 80 degree weather (at night!). Man, from the freezer into the fire! It's a little better now, having cooled way back down again. This spring has been so crazy, two really nice days, some storms, then several really cold days again. Slowly it's been getting warmer, but Winter doesn't seem to want to let go.
Speaking of letting go, today is a day of bittersweet celebration. Osama bin Lauden, architect of the 9-11 World Trade Center plane-crashing Pentagon smashing horrific beginning to a war on terror that has been going on since 2001 is dead. Killed last night in a shoot-out by Navy Seals. I don't think anyone on Earth is capable of judging him fairly, so it's just as well that he resisted (apparently trying to use one of his wives as a sheild) and got himself shot in the head. Only God--Allah, Yaweh, Heavenly Father, whatever you believe in (or not) is capable of judging him. It's best left in His hands. Now I just want our troops to come home. May they be able to come home soon.

Ratinos, trips, and plays
Ratinos
Got this as the word verification for my niece's blog just now. I can't decide if it's a kind of Latino rat or maybe something crunchy to eat. Thoughts?
Trips
I went to CA last weekend to see my Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill is getting old. He's probably around 90 or so. He's been in and out of the hospital since November, but in February decided he really had to move to an assisted living place. So that's where he is now. Since then he's had a stroke, and for a while there my Dad thought he'd be planning a funeral. I made the plans for the trip about two weeks before going, and after hearing about the stroke I was glad. I went thinking I was going to say good-bye. Imagine our surprise when we walked into his room that first day (Friday) and he was awake, aware, and happy to see us. About ready to cry from joy, but also from frustration as the stroke left him without the ability to speak properly. That trip Dad took me down and my brother Blaine and his wife Yoli met us there. It was a good visit. Uncle Bill's cable had been hooked up, and he was watching a basketball game. The facility he's in is very nice (Silverado retirement homes, in Tustin, CA), and one of his "adopted daughters" works there. Uncle Bill has never married, never had children of his own, but has gone out and "adopted" several other families, as well as making each of his nieces and nephews know how much he loved each of us. He is my example.
Saturday my brother David drove me down, and we watched part of our church's Annual General Conference with Uncle Bill. Again he was wide awake, happy to see us. He'd eaten all his breakfast that morning, too. We visited a little more, and talked about how to help with his communication problem a little. Then we returned back to my Dad's house (where we watched the afternoon session).
Spent Thursday and Friday afternoons with my brother David's kids--very fun, Wii, movies, and How I Met Your Mother, not to mention In-N-Out for dinner on Friday. Saturday my niece Leslie picked me up and we went to a movie then dinner at the Rainforest Cafe at Ontario Mills Mall. That was so fun. I love hanging out with my nieces and nephews.
Sunday morning I watched conference with my Dad and Nancy, then Blaine and Yoli and Leslie picked me up to go watch the afternoon session with Uncle Bill. My sister Dustie joined us there, which was great. Uncle Bill was so happy to see her too. He was a little more tired on Sunday. They'd taken him to go do his exercises that morning and tuckered him out. He was still awake, though, and got a little irritated at us for talking when we should be listening :) We brought him a little white board for him to write on, but it will take some practice as he was right-handed and that hand is now useless to him.
All in all, the trip was so much better than I expected. I'd expected to just be sitting by his bedside as he slept. I expected one trip down (it's about an hour from where my Dad and brothers live), hoped for two, and ended up with three. It was wonderful. I'm so glad I went. And here's hoping he sticks around until June, the next time I go out (when my niece gets married!!)
Plays
I'm in a play. I'm sure I've mentioned this. This week is Tech Week (aka dress rehearsals). As well as having several small parts, I'm also in charge of costumes. So I'm really busy. My cat thought when I got home from my trip I'd be HOME. But no. I'm gone every night until 10 or 10:30, then I work on costumes because they're not *quite* done, then sleep for a few hours before getting back up to go to work. Fortunately today is Friday, and I can rest a little tomorrow. Our first performance is tomorrow evening, at 7:30pm, the second one is on Sunday, at 2:00pm. Yes, I know, this means I'm missing church. I can go to a different ward in the morning, and maybe once a year or more it's ok. It's not like anyone's getting paid. Except the AV guys.
I thought it would be fun. I'm sure when I look back on it, it will have been fun. I am getting to know more people, and they are really fun people. But right now I'm just too tired to really care. And all my TV shows are piling up. Although I have been keeping up on my two reality shows (DwtS and AI(my first time watching that one)). I like to have something on while I sew, and they don't require a lot of attention. No plot twists. Although I have to say, Pia was ROBBED!!! Dang Casey for taking the save a couple weeks ago!! (although I was happy for that at the time) I hope someone picks her up, I would love to go see her, and love to have her music. Which I will have some of it, since it's available on iTunes, but I hope she gets to do much, much more.
Ok, back to the play. The Mouse that Roared. Very funny. If you're in the area, please come! Call me for directions (the play is free). And kid-friendly.
Ok, done babbling for now.

1238 steps
I'm getting there, pretty surely. At this rate I may have to decide to do it twice. Course, I suppose if I get close I can just add in the 30 steps I climb every day when I leave work--currently I'm only counting them on the days I don't climb the 98 steps to the fifth floor (and my office). Plus adding in the 23 steps I take on the way to Pilates class. I may have to start counting the stairs in my house deliberately--I think it would be too easy just to count the number of times I go up and down, but if I do both flights in a row, that would count (and be 24 steps).
Rehearsals are going well (I did mention I'm in a play, yes?), but I'm still struggling with mealtimes on those days. Even when I eat dinner before rehearsal my mind thinks I need to have dinner when I get home, even though I've already eaten. I may have to reserve some points for a sandwich or something when I get home. Something nutritious. Fruit is free, but by that time I want something more substantial. Hmmm
Work is going well. Well, exept for the things that aren't, but I'm not in charge or even helping with those things--ouside my jurisdiction. I can only do the things I'm responsible for.
Saturday was nice--Pilates, ironing, laundry, and started working on my curtains that I've had the fabric for for over a year. I actually had started them when I got the fabric but stopped when I realized the fabric I had wasn't long enough. My sister talked me into two-toned curtains, so I'm working on that now. I really hate blinds, so I'll be glad when I can take them down.
Sunday was even nicer, read a book, went to church, ate my 29 points in one sitting (hey, it was Fast Sunday, I'm allowed--aren't I? I may have to rethink that). I did lose .6 lbs today when I weighed in, so that was good. I also managed to sort out my finances. I need to do my taxes soon so I can get my refunds--hopefully. They'll help me pay for my trip to China.
And the best news is: my niece is getting MARRIED!!! The one that just got off her mission last September. She's getting married at the end of June, right before I leave for China, so it looks like I'll be making that trip alone (a friend is coming to China with me, but we'll have to meet up there). I'm so excited for her! And looking forward to getting some more babies in the family :)

Thanksgiving Time again
Around this time of year, I always get a little pensive. My favorite Thanksgivings were when I was growing up. We'd have the big family dinner, my Uncle Bill would come over, and sometimes we'd have other people too, friends and family. I remember one year, I think I was five, Dad put a plank on some sawhorses on the patio in the back yard, Mom dressed it up, and we had our family, Uncle Clive's family, and Uncle Bill all there. I remember the time I first was allowed to make cranberry sauce myself, and how I got splattered when the berries would pop. I remember the year I helped Mom in the kitchen, and I didn't want to do the yams, so I did everything else. Sadly, Mom burned her hand on the yams, taking them out of the oven, I think. I felt bad about that, but like Mom said, I was there helping. I remember the trips we'd make to the Sav-a-Minit market on the corner for those last-minute items--marshmellows, canned pumpkin, stuff like that. There was always a football game on TV, which was turned off during dinner.
My favorite part of the day, though, once dinner was over and mostly cleaned up (we would pick at the remains for hours--a small breakfast and dinner was all we got this day), a brother or sister would sit at the piano and we, my siblings and I, would sing Christmas songs for hours. Dad, being a Band Teacher, didn't want any Christmas songs in the house any earlier than after Thanksgiving dinner, since he had to deal with them starting in September. But this was my favorite part.
Sadly, as the years have gone by, my family has moved away from home, and going back for Thanksgiving just isn't the same now that my Mom has passed on. I don't think I've actually been back there since my nephew Limi was on his mission several years ago. I have had the priviledge of joining my sister Beckie at her house for Thanksgiving several times over the last 8 years they were on the East Coast. Of course, they're back in Utah now too.
One thing I've been thinking about is moving back West. I've even started looking at the JPL job site. I don't think this is something that will happen anytime soon, not until after at least 60 days after RBSP launches (currently scheduled for May 2012). But I'm keeping my eyes open for the opportunity. Like everything else in my life, when the time is right, the way will appear. The Lord takes care of me like that.
So this year I'll be joining friends for dinner and sleeping in my own bed at night. With my cats. Who don't even know that this is a holiday. But at least Kitty will be happy that I'm home, there to open the door for here whenever she wants. Well, mostly. I'm thinking about braving a couple stores on Friday, and on Saturday I'm meeting up with my friends in VA to see Harry Potter. Can't believe I haven't gone to see it yet. (no spoilers please!!!)
In other news, my friend's son, who's serving a mission in Singapore, assigned to the island of Pana-somehting at the moment, was in a serious accident. He was riding his bike and was hit from behind by a car. A big car. After several miracles and a couple of surgeries, it looks like he'll be ok, but any prayers or good thoughts you can send his way, I know the family would appreciate it. His name is Elder Jeremy Schone. The family moved to Utah in August, so really, all I can do is pray. And ask other people to add him to their prayers.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Whoa.
Another year come and gone, and me, well, I still feel 29. Once in a while I have an, "Oh yeah, I guess I am older than you" moment, but usually I just do my thing and all is well.
I had a very special birthday this year--I was able to spend it with my family. This doesn't happen very often, since I live on the East Coast and (now) they're all out West. I got presents and a cake and everything! Pictures... well, they're on my camera and by now you know how that goes. I'll get a round tuit some day.
I was out west to see my lovely niece (yes, they're all lovely, so that's not really a good description) who just returned from her mission a couple weeks ago. She was giving a talk in church on Sunday and I wanted to be there. So I was. I flew out on Friday, had lunch with my Dad, his wife, and my niece (Danja and I had huveros? corn tortillas, beans, meat (we went with chicken), lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and mexican cheese. delicious!), then went to Dad's house to see a cute email he wanted to show us but was unable to print. So we did that for him :) Then we went to Danja's house, and chilled. Not easy to do, it was over 100 degrees outside. I got to meet the newest member of the family, a little terrier mix named Lucy. By far my favorite dog that they've had. So cute. And 6 months old. So yeah, lots of energy. But she's small, so it's not intimidating when she jumps up on you. So Danja and everyone else had to leave that evening except for oldest nephe David. We watched tv and had Farmer Boys for dinner--fried zuchini. You may think I'm crazy, but I love fried zuchini dipped in ranch sauce. It was yummy.
Saturday it was again really hot so we opted to stay home and play with the little kids, my nephew Daryl's kids. Daryl had a football game (he plays for RCC in California) and his lovely wife Kristen and David went to support him. On my wonderful SIL's advice I stayed home (I do burn quite easily). (yes, I did get the acronym from Kristen). I got presents and a cake--did I mention that already? my youngest (in that family) niece took me to In-N-Out for dinner, which was just as yummy as I'd remembered. Can you imagine a fast food place that has proper portion sizes, few selections (hambergers, fries, soft drinks and shakes) and yet is one of the best, most popular fast food places in the west? It was so yummy. We had my cake when we got back. It was really yummy too (do I need a new word? I'll think about that). Then at one point I was tired so I went to take a nap, thinking I'd wake up by 7:00pm PDT. Nope. It was midnight when I finally woke up, so I got ready for bed and went back to sleep. I suppose I get so relaxed around family that I just can't stay awake? anyway, it was a very good day. I even got to talk to some people on the phone, my nieces and ex-SIL that live in AL and my good friend Tammy from my FOHI days. That was great. I'm going to have to be more forthcoming the next time I go to CA, so I can meet up with my old friends there :)
Sunday was great too. Got up, hung out, went to church where Danja gave a great talk. First quote: "Bishops are here to comfort the afflicted; missionaries are here to afflict the comfortable" Love it. It was a great talk, a couple of missionary experiences, lots of quotes, and she tied them all together beautifully. After church the whole family--well, ok, those that were in the area--got together for dinner, mexican themed. I had three servings of the enchiladas. I forgot how much I love enchiladas. I'm going to have to make them at home now. They're amazingly easy.
So I get home last night and my cat-in-hiding was still in hiding. My other cat decided she had to bite me. I'm thinking I still smelled too much like dog for her to be happy. Hopefully she'll get over that today, or I might have to limit her access to me, particularly at night.

Of families and failures
Selfish Brat
Apparently I'm a selfish brat. Three of my eight siblings think so, anyway. Doesn't matter what I say or try to do, I'm apparently only motivated by selfish feelings. I try to let them know how I feel when they treat me badly and I'm suddenly too sensitive. I don't tell them how I feel and they walk all over me. Like I don't matter. Then they have the nerve to tell me that even if they forget me most of the time, I'm still family, they still love me, and if I ever became homeless I could live with them. Like I would. I'd rather be homeless than live somewhere where I'm going to be judged as stupid and incompetent, selfish and rude. Like I'd even let them know how I feel or what's going on with me since they'll just put it through their 'selifish brat' filter and determine that I deserve it. Adversity is a part of life and if they forget me at Christmastime I should just deal with it.
Doesn't seem like such a big deal, does it? Being forgotten at Christmastime? How about the year my Mom died and they forgot me? How about the year everything was going wrong and a simple kind thing would have made such a difference, but they forgot me. Consider that I have serious depression, currently treated with medication. Before I got treatment, though, there was an actual suicide attempt. Because I was convinced my family didn't love me. Seems silly and selfish of me, huh? Being forgotten, left out, or ignored by the very people who claim to love me the most. Really? They care about me? Seriously?
Fortunately, like I said, five of them do actually behave like they don't mind having me around. They don't put everything I say into the 'oh she's just being selfish again' filter.
Sorry, I just had to rant. Now the whole world knows that three of my siblings are, in fact, unwilling to let me progress past my teenage years when I probably was a selfish brat. Most teenagers are, after all. Including them.
Easter
I had a lovely Easter. I went to my sister B's house. She's great. My niece was having her 8th birthday on Easter Sunday, and my sister and her husband were able to arrange for their daughter to be baptized on that same day. Before General Conference (also on that day). Both sets of grandparents came, too. A very full house, but it was fun. We did an Easter Egg hunt at her church between the Saturday sessions of Conference, had a couple of potlucks, one each day (at which there was no green salad!!), and listened to Conference on the internet at her house. I was able to spend a lot of quality time with the 2-year-old, since B had everyone painting cabinets in the kitchen. Paint + toddler doesn't go very well. So we went outside and played. B could work in peace, I got to play with J, and everyone was happy. The other kids were helping their grandma clean out the mini-van, so it would be clean for Sunday. They may not have been quite so happy, come to think of it.
Running
I've been progressing with my running. I've gone to two classes and done my homework (two workouts in-between classes, which are held once a week). I bought new running shoes, and I'll be trying them out tomorrow. It's not much fun while doing it, but it feels really good afterwards. I've managed to undo all the damage I did over Easter weekend, with all the poor choices I was presented with for eating. Now, it wasn't my sister's fault. Like I said, two potlucks. No vegetables at either one. And me giving into my cravings for all that yummy food. It's really hard watching what I eat and trying to make good choices sometimes. Good thing there's running.
TV
With work and church being pretty much the same, the only other thing I really do is watch TV. I'm currently watching:
Monday: Chuck, Life Unexpected, Castle
Tuesday: NCIS, LOST, V, The Good Wife
Wednesday: Human Target, In Plain Sight
Thursday:The Mentalist
Friday: Who do you think you are, Medium, Stargate Universe, Merlin
I have more shows that I follow, but these are the only ones on right now. In the summertime I'll be adding Leverage, Burn Notice, and Royal Pains. Maybe a few more. Cause I'm a selfish brat and can't be bothered to do anything else. Just ask my cat.

Life is calming down?
Well, summer's over, and along with it all the family visits and visiting. Erick and I went to my sister's over labor day weekend, and had a blast. We walked through Congaree National Park with the kids, and Malena had to read all the points of interest along the trail. Since it was a swamp, there was a boardwalk all the way around it. And the Mosquito index was 2 (mild). I was glad of that, but still put on bug spray. Just so you know, the index goes up to 6 (war). On Labor Day Beckie took us to Charleston where we took a carriage ride and walked through the Market. I even bought a sweetgrass basket. Kind of expensive, but should last forever (unless Kitty decides to shred it for some reason). So that was fun.
I dropped Erick off at the airport, and it was time to get back to life. Rehearsals for the Mormon Choir of Washington, DC (MCW) have started up again. I auditioned for a duet, and was asked to come back again. I have to work on my breathing. Last week I had a work conference/workshop at Goddard Space Flight Center, so I drove to Greenbelt on those days. Not a bad commute, really. Took only 20 minutes to get there and back. The key is to only go on the Parkway for as little as you can get away with--in my case, from Powder Mill Road to 197. Worked very well.
Last Friday night (the 18th) I had so much fun. My Realtor, the McGinn group, was having a Customer Appreciation Night--an interactive viewing of The Sound of Music. I invited my friend Kelli to come with, and it was so fun. I wore one of the dirndl's I bought in Germany last year. We were encouraged to participate in the movie, so we sang along with each song, and tried to tell Maria to be careful. By the end a lot of the families with smaller children had gone home, and I think most people were getting tired, but I was having too much fun. I kept going, telling the Captain not to go out from behind his tombstone ("NO!!! Don't do it!!"), among other things. It was great. I do hope I wasn't too annoying, Bob McGinn and Chris (my realtor, the one that helped my find my house) both told me I'd done well, trying to keep it going. I also got to talk to one of my little nursery girls, and she even came to stay in Nursery on Sunday (she'd been having issues about going into Nursery, but not last week *g*)
Saturday I was supposed to go to the RennFest (Irish weekend!) but I had a headache. Now, don't think I was flaking out. I'd had this headache since about 6:45pm Thursday. Yes, I do remember exactly when it started. I just didn't have any time to slow down and try to sleep it off, and the headache medicine I take would make me hyper (imagine how hyper I would have been Friday night if I'd taken it). So I got up Saturday and went to my Pilates class hoping that would help, but when it didn't I took my medicine and laid on the couch watching tv shows all day. And taking a nap. Which may not sound like it made me hyper, but that's because the pain really didn't go away until mid-afternoon. Kitty was ok with the nap thing, but I think she was getting a little annoyed I wasn't playing with her.
This week, so far, we are indeed back to 'normal', whatever that is. I get up, go to work, count my points (I've re-joined Weight Watchers, and it's a good thing, too, since I gained back 10 of the lbs I lost last year just this summer), do some exercise, and watch my tv shows. I'm watching a lot less this year, though I did include Dancing with the Stars since Donny Osmond is on it. He's so cute. And Marie was in the audience, cheering him on. Of the men, I think there's only one or two of them that could be considered major competition. The ladies dance tonight. But I digress. And I can't believe September is 2/3 over. And I can't believe my birthday is on Friday. The number on the calendar is definitely not how I feel. I think my age should be 32 this year. Sound good? Think people will believe me if I tell them that?

Monday monday
not a bad day so far, managed to get up and get to work only 15 minutes later than I wanted to. I still have the Verizon DVR in my trunk that I need to send back to Verizon, so I'll do that this evening. Plus my three packages are ready to mail--one for my sister's birthday that was in July (oops), and two for my missionary nieces (missed their birthdays too--double oops).
Beckie and Dustie stopped on their way back from PA on Wednesday night. That was very fun again. The kids weren't quite so wiped out this time, so we were able to watch the end of their movie before they went to bed. They left the next morning after lots of hugs and kisses. I'll be taking Erick down there in a few weeks, so we'll see each other again soon.
Thursday I managed to *finally* go rock climbing again after several starts and stops (my own fault). I even managed to break my last personal climbing record. Almost made it to the top, but my arms were tired. If you haven't been rock climbing, you have no idea what that means, seriously. You try hanging on to the side of a wall with your arms sometime. Yes, you're supposed to use your legs too, but everything gets used.
Friday night was way fun. Took the sister missionaries out to eat--they requested chinese food so I took them to Hunan Manor, my personal favorite. They loved it. We each got different things and tried them all. After dropping them off it was time for Game Night at Jann's. That was way fun. Harry Potter Clue, do I need to say more? Maybe not, but I certainly want to go get my own edition. Then we played scruples, which was also very fun. The things you learn about people!
Saturday I did indeed start on my office--I'd set aside the whole day to work on it. Well, I actually watched tv for about 5 hours first, so I decided I wouldn't get my reward of going to the movies, but I did manage to clear out one side of the room and almost a whole shelf of books. I'm getting rid of some, but I'm also taking more of my college books to work where I might actually use them. I have two whole shelves of books I haven't read yet. I think I'm embarassed.
Sunday was nice, had the SA potluck that night. Somehow Tess and I ended up at the 'old persons' table. Which really wasn't fair since we sat down at that table first. They didn't go in to their various medical problems, though, so at least we were able to eat. And the food was all very good.
Ok, time to get back to work. For those who want to know what I think about movies I've seen, *cough*Cami*cough* please check the right-hand side of my blog for "Recently Seen Movies and/or DVD's" It's been there quite a while, and that's where I put short reviews of what I've seen. So if I mention a movie but not whether I liked it, just check there.

Had a nice weekend. Saturday went to see GI Joe with my friend, then met up with my other friend for another DVD of LOST. Sunday got my finances organized and bills ready to pay. Went to church and ran nursery--I was the only regular nursery worker there, so I got to set everything up and take everything down. It went well, but it made me remember the days I used to be in nursery, about 5 years ago, when I would come home exhausted from entertaining small children for two hours. The subs helped, but I still got to run the show. It was fun, and they were cute, don't get me wrong, but it made me appreciate just how smoothly Janet has nursery running these days. We all kind of take turns, so no one seems to get overwhelmed. Kind of nice.
Spent yesterday texting my sisters as I knew they were on their way. They left at 10:00am, and I figured they'd be very, very late, but they arrived at 7:00pm, just as predicted. I was amazed. And dinner wasn't quite ready. But it was shortly after they showed up, so no worries.
So Collin, the 4-year-old, runs in the door an immediately starts chasing my cat. I had to take him by the hands, look him in the face, and tell him, "Do NOT chase the cat." repeated three times. He got it, but was still a little overanxious. I let Kitty outside, and she didn't come back in until all was quiet inside (i.e. the kids had gone to bed (note I did not say, "asleep")). Bonnie, the 9-year-old, ended up on the couch in the living room, and Kitty even paid her a few visits in the night time--after I had kicked her out, but out of courtesy to my guests I didn't close my door on her, just shooed her away. She was ok with that. Kitty, I mean. Bonnie was thrilled that Kitty would condescend to sleep with her. On her. Whatever. JackJack was barely awake while he was there, so no worries from him, but Malena was on a tear. I'm thinking that girl has had ENOUGH traveling for this year (they've essentially been on the road for two months). Apparently she kept telling her mom to let her off at the next exit, she didn't want to be in the car anymore. I'm thinking I should probably count children tomorrow night when they come back to make sure Beckie still has four... (jk)
Projects to do tonight, or rather I need to go to JoAnns to get supplies for my projects. I've been putting off this trip for about a week now, for some reason. Doesn't help that the store closes at 9:00pm and I get my second wind about 8:00pm. Oh well. I'll go, it'll be done, and then I can finally send Kathy her birthday present. It's only 6 weeks late...

Just a quick note today...
Ok, so I suppose I worried a few people with my Three-word Thursday. I went to the dentist, he drilled out two teeth, then put a temporary crown on. It's a little achey today, but I'm ok, really. Even if I got really hungry yesterday because the Novacaine hadn't worn off and I hadn't brought lunch because I was supposed to meet the guys for lunch but the Dentist took too long. Fortunately I do have oatmeal in my desk from last winter. That was pretty yummy.
I just found out this morning that my sisters Beckie and Dustie and Beckie's kids are coming to visit me!!! Well, I suppose it's more of a glorified hotel stop, but I'm so glad they're going to come and stay with me! They're taking a trip to PA, which is a really long drive from South Carolina, so they're going to stay with me on the way there and on the way back. So fun! Hope Kitty doesn't mind too much. As long as the kids don't chase her too much she should be ok. Maybe it's time to set up that second litter box on the second floor, though...

July... what happened to June?
Greetings,
So I'm finally comnig back to the blog after a bit of an absence. I went on vacation for two weeks, and of course couldn't be bothered to blog, although I facebooked quite a bit. And went through my email. After all that I was kind of tired so I would go to bed.
I spent the first part of my vacation actually working. We had a meeting for my satellite mission in Redondo Beach, California. We stayed at the Portofino Hotel and Yacht Club. I would just like to say that if I am ever in a position to have a honeymoon, this place is on that List. It was fabulous. My room faced the harbor, and the seals would come in at all hours and bark for us. I loved it. Many people did not like to hear the seals, but I did. I even caved and bought the seal they left on my bed each night (a stuffed one). My excuse is that part of the proceeds goes to help the seals. It was wonderfully relaxing--I think I spent most of my time there (when I wasn't at my meeting) sleeping!
My sister Dus picked me up on the last day of the meeting, and we went to her house. Apartment. Whatever. It's cute and small and absolutely stuffed with books and movies. My kind of place. We watched a lot of movies, mostly on DVD. She had quite a few I hadn't seen. We also went to the movies. We saw The Proposal at the Arc Light in Hollywood. I absolutley adore that movie theater. Apparently there's opportunity to see tv and movie stars there, although there weren't any that day. Afterwards we went to The Grove--kind of an outdoor shopping mall. I got the cutest skirts! I wore one on Sunday, I may wear the other this coming weekend. We also went to see UP. I really liked this one too (see reviews to the side). This was in a normal, AMC theater, though. I had some passes, so it was free for us :)
After about 5 days of movie overload, we got back in Dus's Honda CRV (it wants to be silver but it's only aluminum) and drove to Southern Utah. We met up with our sis Beckie on the way, in Barstow, and took Malena with us for a while. We switched kids at a rest stop and had Bonnie the rest of the way. We even ran into a thunderstorm. In Las Vegas. 400 miles of empty desert and where does it rain? Where there's the most traffic, of course!
The purpose of this trip was to go to our family's very first Andersen Family reunion. My dad and his kids. All 9 of us. Well, 8. Mike didn't come. We found out when we got there that he had a job interview on that day, and since he's been out of work for over a year (just temp stuff, really), it was a good thing. Two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law weren't able to make it, and I do have a couple nieces on missions, but for the most part everyone was there, at least for part of the time. Even the great-grand-kids were there! Ok, so there's only two of them (so far!), so it wasn't too hard, but it was so great to see everyone! yes, I have pictures, but not with me! I took a lot of casual shots.
The first full day there (Thursday) we went up to Zion's Canyon. They've closed the canyon to traffic and will now make you take a tram all the way up and back. It was so cool that my whole family took up an entire bus all by itself! Ok, there were like 4 people there that we weren't related to, but it was great. Collin made me sit by him (he's Beckie's 4-year-old), which of course I was happy to do. As we rode up, I got that special feeling in my heart that I only get when I'm surrounded by my family. I love them so much.
We were supposed to go to the temple that evening, but only three of my sisters made it. I think one of the things that really worked was that everything was optional. One major activity was planned per day, meals were assigned to family members, and everything was kept low key.
The next day (Saturday) we went to Overton, NV, where my Mom is buried. We went to the cemetary, then drove around to various places. It was sooo hot!! Dry heat my foot--after 110 degrees it doesn't matter if there's humidity there or not. My head got sunburned! I felt kind of bad for Nancy tho, my dad's second wife. She came, and she was a sport, but she really isn't a part of our family. Having us ask Dad about Mom and how they met and stuff, that had to be hard for her.
That night we had our 'family meeting' where some things were decided, but Kathy suggested we all go around the circle and tell what's going on in our lives. It was fun. Afterwards I stayed to watch Bolt in my brother Glen's back yard. I hadn't seen it before, and I really liked it.
Sunday some families had to return to their homes, but some of us stayed for church and a final dinner. I was about burned out, so when Dus was ready to leave I went with her (we were staying at a time-share in St George--Glen lives in Ivins, over the hill from St George to the West).
Monday Dus and I went with Kathy and her kids to go Letterboxing. Thats' this thing, kind of like GPS cacheing, only older. Someone will leave a box with a book and a stamp (usually home made) somewhere near where they live, then post directions on how to find it on letterboxing.com. Then other people go find the boxes and put their stamps in the book and put the letter box's stamp in their books. Kathy let me use one of her stamps (she has a big one and a small one) and a blank piece of paper. We found two stamps around St George. It's a good way for someone to give a little background on their territory to someone else. It was alot of fun. I'm thinking maybe I know what to give Kathy for her birthday (now that it's past--oops!)
Dus and I finally returned to her apt in CA, and the next day she dropped me off at LAX. It was a good trip, but I was ready to come home. Kitty was happy to see me, too. I think. She hasn't scratched me yet, so that's a good sign.
I'll try to get some pictures up soon, I promise!
Where there's the most traffic, of course!

bloging bloging
Ok, so I know I took a bit of a hiatus from blogging, but I've found like 5 people to add to my friend list this week! How on earth did I miss them?
Well, my sister Dustie just started her blog, my niece Danja is on a mission and my niece-in-law/Danja's sister-in-law updates her blog for her, and I just found Nicole's blog since they moved a while ago. Ok, so maybe only three. I was sure there was more though... I have it sorted by how frequently people have posted so I don't have to scroll through blogs that haven't been updated for months.
Plus catching up on what my friends have been doing has been great fun. I missed a lot. No worries, though, RL has calmed down and I'm starting to run out of Combat! fanfic to read. I even contributed one of my own (Squirrel's Story) Yeah, I have a call sign. I'm Squirrel. Because Claude Akins calls Kirby Squirrel in Season 5. Like you care, I know. But I have a thing for short scrappy guys who constantly get into trouble (hence my fascination with Pippen from Lord of the Rings). Although this story may not make sense if you haven't seen the show, but it might.
I'm currently in a meeting at work--a telecon, that I didn't have to fly out to Boulder CO to attend, so I get to sit in a confererence room with some other guys from my project and make smart comments while the mute button is on. Best part about remote meetings. And no one cares if I actually get some work done during the meeting, either. Or blog, as the case may be.
Next month will be different since I'm going out to Redondo Beach, California for a meeting. And extending my stay so's I can go to my family's first reunion the following weekend. Oh, tres terrible!
Ok, gotta go now.

Alright already!!!
This is for Kristen who reminded me of my obligations :D
I started blogging for my family who lives, hello, Three Thousand Miles away.
Silly of me to forget that.
So, since March, I have managed to fly to California for my niece's farewell--she's going on a mission!! She's actually now been in the MTC 2 months and will be making her way to Arizona, Tucson, this week (spanish speaking). She's very excited.
I also went to my sister Beckie's in South Carolina for Easter. Her husband is a GREAT cook. We had a Greek Fest for Easter dinner, complete with lamb, greek salad, and stuffed grape leaves. Very yummy. We also went to the beach on Friday, the day after I arrived, which was fabulous. Collin (the 4-year-old) couldn't go--he'd been Very Bad. The night I arrived he went out and was jumping on the car. He went bum-first into the windsheild and shattered it. He was fine, the windsheild was not. He was grounded. fortunately their insurance covered it.
Playing with Bonnie, Malena, and JackJack at the beach was really fun. At one point JackJack (14 months old) got away from his mother during a diaper change, and began exfoliating his bum iin the sand. Fortunately we had a lot of understanding moms and grandmas around us--no one got offended by the little bare-bottomed fiend. It was a nice day at the beach--not too cold, not too warm, a nice breeze.
Saturday we did Easter Eggs and their ward Easter Egg hunt. I was quite impressed with their ward--they're doing a Major Service Project, gathering food for a local church that makes lunches for people in need. They're really struggling since now people can't afford to give, and people who used to be able to give are now in need of their services. So Beckie's ward made it a community service project to gather food items. Their Activity Chairperson is a real go-getter, with flyers and getting the word out, and working with other churches in their community. Quite impressive.
I got home and promptly got sick. The following weekend I slept for about 40 hours (with intermittent wake-ups to care for the cat). Kitty was not happy with me. First I leave, then I sleep. So last weekend as I was getting ready for pilates she clawed my leg. Yup, I have a number of really ugly scratches on my leg. I threw her out of my room and didn't have anything to do with her the rest of the day. Until the end of the day when she sat on my lap and I captured one of her paws and clipped her claws. I got the other one the following day. She's been a little better since then.
I also went to Great Falls, VA, with a couple friends the last weekend in April. We hiked all around--the trails made it feel like we were hiking, and I even got in some rock-climbing and bouldering.
I forgot to mention that me and my good friend Kellie have taken up rock-climbing. It's a big challenge for me, with a fear of heights that I'd forgotten about. Plus I'm really sort of physically challenged as well, but I'm working on that. I'm doing pretty good with that, but Kellie is amazing. She is my new hero. :D
Looking forward to a quieter month with lots of movies (saw Wolverine last weekend, will see Star Trek this weekend, both with my VA friends), and in June I'm going to California. Starting out as a work trip, ending up with my family's very first Family Reunion. My brother's doing an excellent job organizing it. Should be a lot of fun.
I will work harder on posting from now on, Kristen, I promise! Don't send Vance over to 'deal' with me! ;)

California Dreamin...
I'm having trouble getting my pictures off my camera (my computer is not aknowleging my camera), but I just had to blog about this anyway. I had the most wonderful time the last weekend in August (22-25th, not Labor Day weekend).
My niece Leslie is going on a mission for my church. She'll be serving in Utica, New York (which means I have to be good and not go visit her, although that is rather close to the Palmyra/Hill Cummorah area...). We've been texting and emailing all year, and I asked if she'd rather I come out for her graduation or for her Missionary Farewell. She wanted me there for her Farewell, so that's what I did. I checked with my Dad, and while he loves to see me, he suggested I check to see if I could stay at my brother's house (yes, Leslie's dad). I did, all was well, and I even bought a new small suitcase so I wouldn't have to check anything on the airplane. Worked out great, btw.
Friday, August 22, 2008
I got there on Friday, Dad and Nancy picked me up, and we went out to lunch (ok, so with the three-hour time difference I was ready for dinner, but that's beside the point). We had a nice dinner, a little break, and then they took me up to Blaine's. Blaine and his wife Yoli (from El Salvador--they all speak Spanish, while my spanish is barely more than 10 words) are foster parents, and currently have three small children, 1, 2, and 3. The 1 and 2-year olds are girls, the 3-year-old is a boy. And a very precocious boy. After we had just met, he snuggled up to me on the couch and said, very much like a pick-up line, "You know, I'm not married..." It was cute, but kind of sad that a 3-year-old is familiar with that sort of behavior. He also said his girlfriend was Cecily. I asked Yoli who Cecily was, and turns out it's Leslie, my 21-year-old niece. Kid likes 'em older, I guess :D
Hung out with Yoli and her mother and the two little girls for a while, until Blaine, my older nephew Limi, and Mikey (the 3-year-old) came home. Hung out some more until Leslie finally showed up, and we decided we had to go shopping. She had stuff to get on her mission list, so we went to Wal-Mart. I also found out that Saturday was when Leslie was planning on going through the temple. I could have worn the dress I brought (actually one of my dirndl's from Germany), but I decided I'd rather get a new one. So we went shopping. I found an outfit, she got the majority of the stuff on her list, lacking only the shoes. So then, of course, we had to go to Inland Center Mall. Very fun. We went into several shoe stores, and did find the shoes she needed (not the ones she wanted--there were too many that she wanted). We also visited a couple clothing stores, and she bought a cute little sweater/blouse thing that is so adorable (she wore it to church on Sunday, but I wasn't able to get a picture). I also got a cute little over-blouse with stars on it (which I wore to church this past Sunday in my own ward). While shopping Leslie's brother Erick called, and we set up a plan to meet for dinner. He asked if I missed In-N-Out--of COURSE I DID!!! So that's where we went. Yummy hamberguesas! We sat outside and talked for hours. Leslie wanted my perspective on all my brothers and sisters, which I gave her, and come to find out a lot of my impressions are the same as hers--and Erick's, too, once he joined us. Validation is a wonderful thing.
So we talked and talked, and then decided we needed ice cream, so we went back to the mall and the Dairy Queen there. We ran into a friend of theirs, so she joined us for a bit. It was funny, everywhere we went that weekend we ran into friends of Leslie's. So we finally made our way back home. I was rather tired (ok, exhausted since I'd gotten up at 3:00am EDT and it was currently 9:00pm PDT), so I crashed.
Saturday, August 23
Saturday was great. got up, got ready to go to the Temple. Leslie decided she wanted to go to the Newport Beach temple, so that's where we went. I traveled down with my nevies and neicie--so much fun. I just have to say, my adult nieces and nephews are all so much fun to hang out with. They love the same types of things I do, they introduce me to new music, the current fashions, and anything else I ask about. I get to buy them ice cream and sometimes dinner, and apparently they love to hang out with me too.
Fortunately I had my temple recommend with me; I hadn't known we were going to the temple, though, so I didn't have anything else with me. Fortunately the temple did, so I was ok (in the smaller temples they don't rent out that stuff). We got there, and waited for a bit until Blaine and Yoli, and Dad and Nancy showed up. We went in, only to find out Leslie (who had made all the arrangements) hadn't let the temple know it was her first time when she talked to them. Oops. We had to wait for about two hours for her to get prepped, but it was ok. We were able to do some other things while we were waiting.
It was such a special event. There were 8 of us, and we all managed to be in the prayer circle at the end--Limi went with Leslie, Erick with me. We went into the Celestial Room and waited, and when Leslie came in she was crying, she was so happy. And so beautiful. She is really such a sweet girl. I was really glad I could be there. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Blaine's whole family was there, Limi and Erick having served missions already. It was just fabulous.
So. Since we'd had the extra two-hour wait at the temple, we were now all starving (and it was about 3:00pm). We found a little pasta place fairly close to the temple, and had dinner. Yum! Dad and Nancy even stuck around for a bit.
On the way back, we decided we needed ice cream, so we went to the Dairy Queen on Riverside Avenue this time. Erick tried to pay, but their card reader kept rejecting his card, so I paid (yay!). Maybe he can next time. I suppose I shouldn't do that all the time, even though it is fun :)
We got back and we were all stuffed so we skipped the ward pot-luck that was going on. Erick suggested we watch a movie, so we raided Limi's supply and came out with Blazing Saddles (can you believe I've never seen it??? well, now I have). Blaine even watched part of it with us--the part he wasn't dealing with small children. They did go to bed eventually, though, and he was able to watch the end with us. Then, again, I was exhausted, so I went up to bed. What a wonderful, special day.

Sunday Leslie was speaking in her parent's ward. She normally attends the Young Single Adult ward (they live near a university so there's enough people to have one), but YSA wards don't send people on missions so she's officially going from her parent's ward. I once again went with the younger set to church, and when we got there my Dad and Nancy were there, as was my brother Mike, and my brother David and Joan and most of his kids (except Daryl and his family, who I really wanted to see since I haven't seen baby Jane yet, except in pictures--drat!). That was great though. Again with the loving of the hanging out with my adult neicies and nevvies. My last trip to CA was spent in the company of Daely and Danja, and was also a blast. I didn't have a whole lot of time this trip (I am scraping the bottom of the barrel of my vacation time), but I figured I should at least be able to see them on Sunday. And I did!
Leslie gave a wonderful talk on being an example of the believers. She was busy writing it on Saturday on the way to and from the temple, and while Erick and I were watching the movie. She did a fabulous job, I took lots of notes. I got to sit by Limi and Erick, behind Daely and Danja. Danja also sang with her friend, accompanied by my brother Blaine. It was wonderful (I'm going to run out of adjectives anytime now). I love to hear her sing. I love to hear Blaine play. I love my family :::sigh::: It was kind of interesting to look around their ward and realize that my family took up roughly 1/3 of the congregation. And that my ward is probably about 3 times the size of Blaine's ward. How would it be...?
After Sacrament Meeting was over, Blaine and Yoli went off to their classes with the little ones, my visiting siblings left with the two younger of my nieces and nephews, leaving the rest of us to hang out until the YSA ward Sacrament meeting which followed at 1:00pm. Daely, Danja, and David F (my oldest nephew) stayed as well. I got the low-down on the people in the ward, and an injunction from Yoli to check out the women in the ward for my nephews. One of my concerns, as it is hers, is that these wonderful young people--my nieces and nephews--are not dating. At all. Not going out with groups or anything. Then again, according to Daely, there really isn't anyone around. My thinking is that they really need to just get out of dodge, and I keep inviting them to come live with me, but so far no one's taken me up on it. We have lots of cute, wonderful YSA in my area... Of course, apparently my two nephews are highly sought after in their ward (which can also be a weird situation). One girl even came and sat with Limi and me. Nice enough girl, but way too anxious to get Limi to notice her.
Another girl came over and was getting introduced to my visiting nieces and nephew, looked at me and said, "are you their mom?" We all just went, "huh??" She tried to take it back, but the damage was done. I said, "no," of course, and then said, " I'm not actually old enough to be any of your mothers." Daely said, "Maybe Dallan," (who is in high school still), and Erick added, "You'd have to have been a really young mother, though," I thought later that I should have told the girl that she wasn't allowed to date my nephews, but it's probably just as well. They're not interested in her anyway. And yes, she was blonde, why do you ask? (Hey, I'm blonde too!)
After Sacrament meeting, David F wanted to go to sunday school, Leslie disappeared to her missionary prep class, and Daely and Danja hatched an elaborate plan to go get Daely's car so David could get his car back (since he'd driven and they wanted to come to Leslie's house for dinner but David wanted to stay at church--it was complicated). Hmmm, maybe David found a cute girl... Anyway, Erick went with them, I stayed with Limi until we decided Leslie could find her own way home and we left. got back, changed, made sure I was packed (I was going back to Dad's house for the night since my flight was really early in the morning), then tried to help in the kitchen--it's kind of a small kitchen, so not a lot of room. I entertained the little kids for a while until Leslie and her friends came home from church, and Daely, Danja, and Erick showed up. We had dinner at the table, the kids and me, and really did have fun. Daely and Danja had to leave for a meeting, so they didn't stay much past dinner, and I didn't think fast enough to get them to take me back with them, but it was ok. I hung out a little longer, then said good-bye to my sweet family. Limi was my chauffer back to Dad's, and we had a great conversation about daggers and things (he collects knives--I have them for Christmas this year, and since I'm going to the Renaissance Festival soon, now I know what to get him).
Not much to tell after that. Got to Dad's, was exhausted (the theme of the weekend, apparently), so since Dad and Mike had just finished putting my bed together (air mattress on the floor, you know), I went to bed. Got up and got on the plane the next morning with no trouble--actually, none of my flights were delayed this time. Nice. Had enough time in the Huston Airport to raid the Space Trader store (stuff from Johnson Space Center), including a mug that says, "It's not Rocket Science (oh wait, yes it is)" with the NASA logo on it :D And a few more things I really shouldn't have bought but did anyway. Got a ride all the way to my terminal--it was quite a distance, so I was really glad the guy offered. I would have been thinking I was getting lost or something, but he knew right where to go. Got home and Kitty was a little upset with me (hey, I had my friend Janet come over and feed her, it's not like she starved), but she got over it.
All in all, it was a fabulous weekend. And as soon as I can get my pictures off my camera and onto flickr, I'll show what 'Golden California' really means :D
What a fabulous weekend.
PS just so you know, I love hanging out with my younger nieces and nephews too, there are benefits to both, but it's really fun to relate to the adult ones on an adult level. Like we're friends, only more than friends because we're also family.
PPS my sisters complain that I write too much when I blog--guess it's true. And congratulations to you if you've made it this far!!

Nice. Yippee Skippee!
Well, Dus has come and gone. They (Dus and Mar) apparently did a little sight-seeing in Salem, Mass yesterday morning--where they bought matching t-shirts (Good girls go to Heaven, Bad girls go to Salem). So cute. Dus called just as I was leaving work to let me know that they were just getting to New York City. Yup, right at rush hour. Not so much fun. So I went home, fixed myself dinner, and did some basic chores around the house. I called Dus at 7:00pm--They had just gotten in the correct lane to cross the George Washington Bridge (sigh). I went outside and mowed my lawn (well, ok, 2/3rds of it). Then I called again at 9:00pm--they were just passing Trenton on the Jersey Turnpike. So I watched the rest of The Rat Patrol tv series (my friend Helen had leant it to me--it's my current obsession) with Kitty (she really likes The Rat Patrol for some reason), and got their beds ready. Then Dus called at 11:00pm--they were here!!! Yay!!!
They were so tired. They unwound for a bit, then Dus got to open her Birthday Present (notepapter, musical pencil, and a magnet from the Mozart Museum in Salzburg as well as a picture of Jason Dohring whom she loves), then we headed for bed around midnight. Kitty wanted to go outside so badly, and finally escaped at some point so she had to stay outside last night. Serves her right, plus both Dus and Mar are allergic to cats. Kitty wasn't very happy about that either (as anyone who has met her can attest, Kitty is very social--she loves people).
I wasn't able to take them to dinner, so we decided to go out for breakfast at Bob Evans. I found out as we got there that they had made a goal to stop for meals at restaurants they hadn't heard of before--Bob Evans fit the bill. As did Panera Bread, where they ate last night (don't they have those in CA?). So we had a little fun time. I wish they could have stayed longer, but they are now off on their way to Beckie's house. I tried to get them on their way sooner this morning than yesterday morning, so hopefully they can be to Beckie's before dinnertime.
Those two are so silly, so much fun. Dus blamed much of her silliness on the Mountain Dew she'd been drinking, but I'm thinking it has a lot to do with the company as well. Maybe they can come visit again someday, when they can stay longer...

quick update
I know, it's been a while. Yes, I've been more busy at work, which tends to affect the length and frequency of my posts. I'll be in meetings most of this week, so we'll see. Evenings are going to be busy too, as I get ready to go to South Carolina this weekend (my nevvy Jackjack is getting blessed). I did think about going to Utah instead, but financially this is the right decision.
Why would I go to Utah instead? Especially since it would only be for the weekend? Well, my Grandpa finally gave up the ghost; the funeral is on Saturday. He's at peace now. He passed away in his sleep on Friday morning. I was at home on Friday due to the ice storm (no work, yay!) so was sitting at my home computer when the email came. My dad was going to call me but thought that I would be at work. You know, I think I grieved about 4 weeks ago when I first heard. And then again two weeks later when I hadn't heard anything and freaked out. It really is a good thing--Grandpa was in his 90's, Grandma passed away almost 5 years ago, and all his children are older and self-sufficient. Lots and lots of grandchildren, lots of great-grandchildren and more on the way. He was so healthy his body took a whole month to release him.
A little about my Grandpa. He was a schoolteacher, a principal, a farmer, and a blacksmith. He served two missions later in life with his sweetheart, one to Bolivia, and the other to Nauvoo. He was the one who first started using the Blacksmith Shop as a real Blacksmith shop, building wagons and handcarts to keep busy in the slow winter months. He even built a handcart for the Winter Quarter's Visitor's Center, and in 1997, when they did that 150-year celebration/trek to Salt Lake City, someone took that handcart to Utah. I beleive it or one of its brothers is on display in one of the Church Buildings around Temble Square. To be sure, lift it up and see if you can find the stylized A on the bottom--Grandpa Allan's brand. One of his great-grandparents was a blacksmith in Nauvoo as well. Cool, huh? He was always so worried about me not being married. I hope he knows not to worry; I really am ok. I love you Grandpa. See you when I get there.
Last weekend I went to the Home and Garden Show at the Dulles Expo Center with a friend. We had fun, and managed to find way too many ideas for our budgets. I'm thinking a nice patio in my back yard, and some lilacs by the side of my house, to cover up the rather ugly-looking concrete. And make it so I don't have to mow that side anymore. I found a shed at Home Depot that I want to get (small, rubbermaid, but still looks like a shed). I also found a free-standing porch-swing that I could really get behind. When my tax return comes in, it may not last long... then again, I suppose I have to file my taxes before I can get them back.
My friend also helped me find a new toy for Padme Kitty--a lure with feathers, on a string attatched to a stick. She loves to chase it as I flick it around. She looks at me like, "Isn't it time to play now?" At least she gets more exercise this way. We've been doing pretty well.

Snowfall...
Well, after a few brief weeks of spring, we are back to wintertime here in Maryland. Oh boy! (sarcasm, just in case it wasn't clear). My daffodils had started coming up, the early spring ones, in December. I was a little worried about them. The cat wouldn't come back inside today, so she's outside in the snow. Serves her right? She has her vet appt tomorrow, so we'll see about that. In other 'kitty' news, her former 'dad' seems to have returned. I'm now wondering if she wants to go back to him. I knew there was a reason I shouldn't get too attatched. She even drew blood last night, but it was my fault. I like to play with her paws, and she tries to bite me when I do (the blood was from scratches when she ran away after I booped her to the head for trying to bite me). Silly Kitty. Crazy, silly kitty. She likes to 'hide' in her box and take swipes at me when I walk by. Tell me again why I took her in?
Family life is good. My nephew's wife had their second baby, a little girl, last week (Jan 7). I got the call just as I was leaving for FHE at the Bishop's house :) Her name is Jane Elizabeth. My first thought on hearing that was, "I wonder if she's a Jane Austin fan?" I suppose she wouldn't have to be, I think that's just the circles I run in, but still! She's a very cute baby. Let's see if I can post her picture... Nope. I'll try again later. So I'm a twice-great aunt!! Yay for me! yay for my nieces who have a niece! Now they have one of each!
Other good family news--my niece Leslie is going to be graduating in May and then putting in her papers to go on a mission! Her cousin Danja, that's a week older, is in the process of putting in her papers (the Stake President has them at the moment). Their hope is to be at the MTC at the same time, but we'll see. I'm so excited!!! Leslie's older brothers both went, but Danja is the first in her family. I'm so excited for them both!!! I'm going to have to stop breaking down my boxes so I can get ready to send care packages :D
Work is going well. The Powers That Be at APL have determined NOT to outsource the MOC (Mission Operations Center--get used to this acronym) (i.e. my job). The project managers need to present our plan to cut our budget on the 24th to The NASA Powers That Be. So still a little nervous, but life can go forward. The TIMED MOT (Mission Operations Team--get used to this acronym too) has succeeded in putting up a major software load to their processor, tested it, and the satellite is performing really well. Better than before, in fact. So, aside from the fact that we'd probably be doing this anyway, we're going to Mexican today (El Azteca in Clarksville). So fun!! In spite of snow. Though it's not too bad right now, and I did see multiple snow trucks out this morning, so it looks like they're prepared for the worst. Should we start taking bets as to which school system is going to shut down first? Winner gets to stay home with their kids... ;)
I think that's all I have to say for now. Happy snow day!

...and a happy new year!
Ok, so I had a lovely Christmas at my sister's house. I even had presents, swo I worried for nothing. I got to hold Baby Jack (6 weeks old) a lot of the time. My sister laughed at me for wanting to hold a crabby baby, but I didn't care. and he was never crabby for long. She asked me once if I was trying to get it out of my system, holding babies, but I said I was just trying to soak up as much as I could. He's so little!! Most of my nieces and nephews have been monster children, but Jack is Beckie's smallest, and he's still so tiny! I think he's still under 9 lbs. He's healthy, no worries, he's just not a monster child. Like two of his siblings. I'll get pictures posted to flikr sometime this week, I'll let you know when.
There were a lot of really good moments, too. Bonnie and Malena's grandmother Omi knew one of them loved Cinderella, but she got her wires crossed as to which one. So when Bonnie saw she was getting Cinderella toys and Malena was getting Sleeping Beauty, she immediately asked Malena if she wanted to trade. It was so sweet. Bonnie doesn't care that much as long as she gets toys. I mentioned this to Beckie, when the girls were in the room, and referred to Malena as a Cinderella-freak. Then I said I was a Star Wars freak. Malena said, "No, you're a DOLL freak! And I'm going to buy all your dolls from you when I get older!" "She's got you pegged," Beckie said. That was so fun. Doug didn't pull his usual disappearing act either, which was also nice. My sister married well. In PA, though, the house was so small, it felt like we were always on top of each other, so Doug would disappear into the depths or out to the garage. Their new house is almost twice as big, with no stairs, and a huge, huge yard. They're thinking of getting chickens. They need to fence in the yard, though, or a portion of it. The back of the yard has a pond. Not good for three-year-old inquisitive boys to be around. I really like their new house. Their family room is so large! I think you could fit my whole house in it! Probably not, but it's really big. Plenty of room for several activities to be going on at the same time. Baby Jack hasn't been blessed yet, so I'm thinking I may have to go back in February or March...
Thank you to all my friends. I'm at risk of becoming extremely sappy, so I'll stop now, but I do appreciate all you do for me. I go through periods of extreme anti-social behavior, but having you there when I pull out of it means the world to me. Thank you. I hope you all had Merry Christmases too.
